Quest One: Not this place again

 [Mae walks up in a bed. That alone is enough to set off alarm bells. She remembers very distinctly going to sleep last night, leaning against a half destroyed wall with a dog next to her. And considering how...well non destroyed the room was looking.... 

She very quickly snuck out of bed and started to look around the house. Grabbing a baseball bat from the small boy's room as she went. Never hurt to have a weapon when you've been kidnapped.  She looks outside.



......well this wasn't good. She quickly goes back inside and get's dressed, interogates some drones and locates the phone.]

Dr. Braun, if you're there. We need to talk because I'm pretty sure being back in this place is impossible considering everyone died last time. 

[And with that she hangs up. She's sure if he is behind this...and who else would be? It's just like last time...though she admits it's ...different and slightly more impossible...that if he was behind it, he'd be calling back to gloat at any moment. Until then.  
 

Mayfield there is a woman wandering around carrying a baseball bat like a weapon. You can find her.

A. On her lawn examining the grass, or her arm. They...feel more real then the simulation. But there's also colour here, so maybe it's just a tech upgrade. 

 

B. Going through your mailbox or garbage can. Hey, who knows what valuables you might have thrown away....like this bottle cap, score!

 

C. Interrogating young drone girls at the playground. Seriously, which one of you is in charge here?

 

D. Looking through windows of peoples houses to see if they're abandoned. Aka: where the hell is the failsafe to this place]

So...you're a country.

Either you're right or you're some crazy person but seeing as I've had to come to that conclusion about everyone else here, might as well go with the first.

[His smile is a bit sheepish.] I know it's a bit hard to believe, though you'll probably meet others who will introduce themselves as countries as well. I know America's here. Russia was, but he's been droned since.

I don't think we had nations like that in my world.

It seems to be unique to my world, from what I've heard. Something like that--would be really--

[He shakes his head to clear it. Best not to think too hard on it.]

So you already know there seem to be quite a variety of people here.

[Changing the topic is good. Because history us sad. And it sounds even worse with people-countries. ...she wonders what would have happened to Canada.]

So...is there a 'reason' why we're here? Free slave labour or something?

I don't think anyone knows. They make us live in family units--a mother, a father, one or two children--and go to school or work, as if this was a normal town in the 1950s. Everything seems built to make us think we've always lived here.

Does the setting change randomly and people die horrible deaths only to return unharmed?

...Something like that, yes. Only it's usually still Mayfield when they do things.

Well I was trapped in a virtual reality simulation back home once.

...it looked a lot like this. I had to find the fail safe to get out. A nutty scientist had pretty much taken over the simulation and used it as his personal toy. Killing people and wiping their memories over and over. In the end the only way I could get them away from that was ...well killing them.

[She shudders. Not happy about how that played out. Even if she had gotten her dad out.]

Creepy as hell too. He disguised himself as a little girl among the small group of people there.

[He is just. Going to. Stare. Like in an "oh my god is that what's going on here" way.]

I think her name was Betty but....

Really? A small girl is in control....

[Hand on head.]

Okay, this place is a lot different from the simulation. There it was one street, with me and a lot of ...well drone like people I guess you'd call them. There was only one woman who seemed to realize something was wrong. And she's the one that told me where to find the failsafe.

But so many people...that just ....arrived here. There can't be enough pods for everyone.... and then the whole different worlds thing. Which would make even less sense if this was a simulation....

Lucy's a girl who seems to be in charge here, though there's the mayor, a police officer named Grady, and the Milkman, too.

It doesn't seem exactly the same, but it seems similar enough that it's the best theory about this place I've heard.

[She immediately goes to her wrist to write that down....

Oh wait....no pipboy. She sighs and moves her hand back.]

Well I suppose that means I'll be looking for an invisible computer in my spare time.

Is that the failsafe thing you talked about before? I know there are a few places we can't get into--or that it would be a bad idea to walk into.

Really? What sort of places?

It was hidden behind a lock of some sort in an abandoned house last time. You had to tap random objects and they'd make...a noise and then you had to do it in the right order.

...that one took a while.

That seems like a weird way to hide something. But let's see, there's Lucy's house--the Smith house, that is--the dairy, and the police station. There's the post office, where you can get things back from home, but it costs you things like limbs or organs or memories, so you should just wait to get them back.

The milk that gets delivered to your door is poisoned, so don't drink it. You can buy safe milk at the store, though. And you have to sleep in the house you showed up in at least once every three days, or you'll be droned. It's the same if you end up with a job--go at least once every three days.

You'll get a call if you miss a day without realizing. That's how I found out I had one.

What sort of jobs do they have here?

Fairly standard jobs, I think. Teachers, waiters, office work, doctors, lawyers... I work at the bakery.

How's working in a bakery? ...what kind of stuff do you sell?

Bread, cake, pastries, that sort of thing. I like baking, so it's not bad.

Wow, that's a lot. We only have pies back home and it's usually meat.
